Street vendors borrow from informal lenders and can't see how fast the debt grows
A WIEGO study of Bangkok informal workers found half had taken on debt in the past year, from THB 3,000 to THB 200,000, at monthly interest of 1-20%, mostly from informal lenders. A vendor in a later WIEGO brief said 'Debt will be with us for our entire lives.' The r/Bangkok thread on vendor costs mentions loans that trap people.

5 ways to tackle it
Voice and phone
Before You Sign Hotline: say a lender's offer on the phone, hear the real cost
A vendor calls a number and says 'borrow 5,000 baht, pay 300 a day for 20 days'. A Thai voice says 'you pay back 6,000, that is 20 percent in 20 days, about 365 percent a year' and says whether it is cheaper to use the village fund. It works on any phone, for vendors who never type.

Notebook Reader: photo of a handwritten loan page shows what you really owe
Vendors keep loans in a school notebook: dates, daily payments, crossed-out numbers. Claude vision reads the page, adds up paid and left, and shows the true interest and when the loan ends at this pace. The notebook stays, the vendor just gets the answer.

Debt Jar: a strip of LEDs that shrinks each time you pay
A glass jar lit by an LED strip shows the loan as a full column of light. Each time the vendor pays, a button press shortens it by that amount and the tiny screen shows true days left. Seeing the debt shrink every day makes it real, with no app and nothing to explain to the family.

Loan Form Filler: answer ten questions in Thai and get the cheaper loan application filled
The vendor answers ten spoken questions about the stall, daily sales and the current debt. The agent fills in the application for a licensed low-rate loan, such as a state bank microloan or a community fund, as a printable form with the list of documents to bring. The paperwork wall that pushed people to informal lenders gets shorter.

Share Circle: run a trusted rotating savings circle with receipts for every round
Neighbors who already run a ไฮ or แชร์ circle can set one up: who pays, the turn order, due dates and a PromptPay QR per round. Each payment prints a small receipt and the round's pot is tracked in public so nobody doubts it. A circle of 10 vendors paying 500 a week gives one a 5,000 baht lump sum without the interest.
