Corner grocers and neighbors run credit on a handwritten tab that neither side can check

A Pantip poster asking how grocers handle 'sign now, pay later' got replies that owners only allow it for neighbors they know well and are willing to chase, and that a signed slip for a few hundred baht is not a legal document and can't really be collected. Another poster says they signed for goods all month, thought it was about 5,000 baht, and was billed 9,500. Commenters told them to keep their own list and have the shop confirm every item on LINE. Today the only record is a notebook the shop owns.

5 ways to tackle it

  • Hardware and sensors

Twin Tab Slip: a two-copy slip pad with item boxes, both sides keep one

A printed carbonless pad where the shop writes items and the amount and the customer signs. The customer keeps the second copy. A photo of the top copy is read into the shop's tab, so the 5,000 versus 9,500 baht problem has two matching papers.

Build with Carbonless pad design, printed QR, Claude vision, Sheets

  • Hardware and sensors

Tab Receipt Printer: a keypad and printer by the till that prints a running balance

The shop keys the neighbor's code and the amount. A small printer prints a slip with the item total and the new balance, so every sign-now-pay-later purchase leaves the customer with a receipt.

Build with ESP32 or Pi, 4x4 keypad, thermal printer, Google Sheets

  • Camera and vision

Notebook Scanner: photograph the old paper tab and import every neighbor's balance

The owner photographs the handwritten tab. Vision reads names, dates and amounts into a clean ledger, so years of paper become something a customer can look up without disturbing the owner.

Build with Claude vision, Google Sheets, name matching

  • Voice and phone

Say-It Tab: the owner says 'Auntie Noi, fish sauce and two eggs' and the tab is updated

The owner speaks the sale while handing over the goods. The system writes the item and amount to the neighbor's tab and reads back the new balance, so the record exists the moment the neighbor walks away.

Build with Whisper Thai, Claude parser, Sheets, TTS read-back

  • Web portal

Balance Card: a laminated QR card per neighbor, scan it any time to see your tab

Each regular customer gets a card with a personal QR. Opening it shows every item signed for this month and the total, so a customer can tell their own number before the bill comes.

    Build with Next.js, per-customer QR, read-only page
