Teens choosing a university faculty rely on years-old forum guesses about whether graduates find jobs

On Dek-D a student who likes communication arts wrote that family wants doctor, nurse or engineering because they fear graduates won't find work, and replies split between 'study what you like' and 'study what has jobs'. A 2017 poster got scared when told a geology graduate ended up selling medical equipment, and got opposing answers: few government positions versus the best-paid science degree. A 2020 engineering thread had one reply saying engineers get pushed out when older and another with a 58 year old earning 110,000 baht a month. Answers are anecdotes, some years old.

5 ways to tackle it

  • Data and maps

Job Outlook: pick a faculty and see today's real job posts, pay and skills

The teen picks a faculty. The tool counts live job posts that accept its graduates, shows salary ranges and the top asked skills, with a date on every number. It replaces forum guesses with this month's postings.

Build with Job board APIs or public listings, Claude classification, Next.js

  • Hardware and sensors

Faculty Receipt Kiosk: press a faculty button, a dated receipt of jobs and pay prints

At a school fair or cram school, a box with big buttons per faculty prints a receipt: top three jobs, pay range and the date. The timestamp makes it clear the data is fresh, and the teen takes it home to show their parents.

Build with Raspberry Pi, arcade buttons, thermal printer, Job Outlook API

  • Voice and phone

Parent Role-play: practice the talk with an AI mom who wants you to be a doctor

The teen speaks to an AI that plays a worried parent: 'a communication arts graduate won't find work'. It gives replies backed by real postings and salary data and ends with a card the teen can show the parents.

Build with Claude, Thai speech, Job Outlook data

  • Web portal

Old Advice Meter: a browser add-on that dates forum answers and checks them today

On Dek-D or Pantip, the add-on tags each answer with its age and a verdict like 'this 2017 claim: engineer pay now 25 to 70K'. Teens see in the thread itself which anecdotes have gone stale.

Build with Chrome extension, Claude, Job Outlook data

  • Web portal

Grad Voice Notes: a wall of 60-second voice notes from graduates, by faculty

Graduates record a minute about their first job and pay. Teens play them, filter by faculty, and send a voice question back. There is no chat to run, only a library that grows by graduates talking once.

Build with Next.js, audio upload, Whisper transcription, tags
