Bangkok bus riders can't tell where a bus goes after route renumbering, and stops show no arrival times
After a January 2024 renumbering, bus 59 became 1-8, and the ministry then proposed dropping the dash so 1-15 would read 115. Passengers called it confusing, complaints flooded the BMTA Facebook page, and a House committee and the union asked for the old numbers. In 2026 the BMA says commuters still face uncertain arrivals and route confusion across about 5,199 stops.

5 ways to tackle it
Hardware and sensors
Pocket Route Card: a printed wallet card with your three buses, old and new numbers
The rider enters home, work and the places they go. The tool prints a credit-card-size card listing each bus with the new number, the old number people still say, the stops to board and where to get off, so riders without data don't need to ask the driver.
Build with Static site, BMTA open route data, printable PDF and thermal printer, laminate
Camera and vision
Bus Front Reader: point your phone at an approaching bus, learn where it goes
The rider points the camera at an approaching bus. Vision reads the number on the front and says in Thai whether it is the old or new number, where the bus goes and whether it passes the rider's stop.
Build with Claude vision or YOLO plus OCR, GTFS route table, mobile web, Thai TTS
Data and maps
Bus Rosetta: one open table of every old and new route, searchable by what you remember
A rider types a number they remember, a landmark or a stop name. The table, built from the official renumbering lists, returns the matching routes and notes the dash-or-no-dash confusion like 1-15 versus 115.
Build with BMTA route data, SQLite, fuzzy search, static site
Voice and phone
Bus Hotline: call, say the number you know, hear the new one and where it goes
For riders without smartphones, a free phone number answers a spoken route number or a place and replies in Thai with the new number, where to wait and the next stops. A sticker with the number is pasted on the stop pole.
Build with Twilio Voice, Whisper Thai, Claude, route table, printed sticker
iPhone and Android app
Ride Alarm: say where you are going, it speaks up two stops before
The rider picks a destination, locks the phone and rides. The app tracks GPS and speaks in Thai two stops before the stop, so uncertain arrivals and sleepy rides don't mean missing the stop.
Build with PWA, geolocation API, GTFS stops, Web Speech Thai
